Music lovers including Countess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, the matriarch of one of Germany's wealthiest families, flocked to Salzburg at the weekend for the Austrian town's annual festival.

The countess, who like many festival-goers wore traditional Austrian costume, hosted a concert in the grounds of her family seat in Bavaria last week. And there was more music on the agenda over the weekend when she attended a performance of Don Giovanni.

Also on hand for the first day of the five-week culture fest, the line-up for which includes 43 operas, 68 drama performance and 81 concerts, was Mick Jagger's former wife Bianca Jagger.

The Salzburg Festival is one of Europe's biggest opera, music and drama festivals - and also one of the priciest, with tickets costing as much as 370 euros for a single show.

The storm over Carol Vorderman's departure from Countdown continues after a raft of celebrities have spoken out in her favour. Famous faces who've appeared in the C4 programme's 'Dictionary Corner' section backed the resident number cruncher, who walked out after being asked to take a 90 per cent cut to her estimated £1 million-a-year salary.

TV bosses are said to have told the popular presenter: "The show survived without Richard Whiteley. It can survive without you."

Esther Ranzten said: "I'm absolutely astonished that Carol's been treated with such an extraordinary lack of good manners."

The TV veteran was joined in her outrage by Ingrid Tarrant, Anne Widdecombe and Sian Lloyd among others. Former weathergirl Sian remarked: "It's hard to imagine what appeal the show will have without her".

But this week programme makers, who are facing a 33 per cent cut in the show's overall budget as a result of the poor economic climate, insisted, "Countdown will continue, but with new presenters".

Seven years after abandoning their first attempt, Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp and film-maker Terry Gilliam are trying once again to shoot the film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Based on the Cervantes novel, the film stars Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny as an advertising executive who travels back in time.

In one of the most incident-prone shoots ever, the original attempt to film the flick suffered a variety of accidents, including the set being washed away by a flash flood and one the lead actors taking ill. After just five days of filming, Monty Python star Terry was forced to pull the plug on the project.

Since then, the failed movie has found fame as the subject of 1992's hit documentary Lost In La Mancha.

According to a source, the two men, who made Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas together, are now confident that they can finish the production this time.

A great deal has changed in Britain since Queen Elizabeth became head of state in 1953, not least the role of the monarch. And so, in the royal family's continuing aim to be as modern as possible, Prince William will turn apprentice to receive the training needed for his future role as king.

As well as taking on a more active role within the monarchy, Wills' education will take him to the heart of government and the judiciary. He will spend time working at Whitehall to gain experience of the inner workings of parliament.

Keen to prepare himself for his future role, the handsome 26-year-old will carry out more charity work and take over the running of the Sandringham estate from his grandfather, Prince Philip. It is believed he will also take part in solo tours of the Commonwealth.

"You could say he'll be the first person to ever get an apprenticeship in kingship," a senior royal aide said.

Training starts next year, after the Prince finishes his time with the military. Currently on secondment with the Royal Navy, the royal has been seeing more action in the Caribbean. William took part in his second drugs bust this week, travelling in a Lynx helicopter chasing a speedboat suspected of shipping cocaine.

Amy back home after treatment for a 'bad reaction to medicine

Amy Winehouse has been discharged from hospital after spending Monday night being treated for a "bad reaction to medication", her spokesman said. An ambulance was called to the jazz songstress' North London home in the evening and she was taken to University College Hospital.

Police helped clear a path through photographers while Amy was brought out sitting in a wheelchair and wrapped in a blanket.

Concerns had previously been expressed for the singer's health by her dad Mitch after she was hospitalised last month to be treated for traces of the lung disease emphysema.

But after visiting his daughter on Monday night, he told reporters Amy was well enough to eat a fast food chicken meal, adding she "scoffed the whole thing".

Doctor Who makes a special appearance at the Proms

Music-loving sci-fi fans had a treat on Sunday when Daleks and Cybermen took over the BBC Proms.

In a special Doctor Who-themed concert, former assistant Freema Agyeman presented a selection of classical favourites all featuring the theme of space and time. Music from the BBC's hit series – including the legendary signature tune - was also performed at the Royal Albert Hall concert.

While the Doctor – actor David Tennant – could not be there in person, he did make an appearance in a specially filmed scene shown during the two-hour event's interval. The action was written by Russell T Davies, the man behind the return of the show.

The family friendly concert is the first appearance of Doctor Who in the Proms' 118-year history.

Chris Evans faces fear with parachute plunge from 13,000ft

Plummeting through the sky, arms flung wide and a huge grin on his face, Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans was obviously revelling in his very first skydive. The 42-year-old had jumped from a plane 13,000ft above Hampshire's Salisbury Plain as part of a personal mission to "conquer his fear of death"; a project which has dominated his radio show for the past few months.

Leaving wife Natasha Shishmanian on the ground to await his arrival, Chris boarded a plane with the Tigers Parachute Display Team from the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. He was strapped to the leader corporal for the 35-second freefall.

"That was amazing!" said the exhilarated star after landing safely. "It felt like it was over in seconds. There's no time to be scared as you are plummeting to the ground. I sang (Elton John's) Are You Ready For Love all the way down! An awesome, awesome experience; can't wait to do it again."

'Emmerdale' stars bid fond farewell to screen colleague Clive Hornby

The cast of TV soap Emmerdale joined the friends and family of Clive Hornby to pay their respects at the actor's funeral in Leeds on Tuesday.

Clive, who played flat-capped farmer Jack Sugden for 28 years, passed away earlier this month aged 63.

Both former and present members of the ITV show paid tribute to the soap's longest running star, including Clive's on-screen wife Diane, played by actress Elizabeth Estensen, who spoke of the actor's bravery as she read a eulogy at the service.

Also in the congregation was Clive's on-screen son Andy Sugden - played by Kelvin Fletcher - who acted as a pallbearer alongside Mark Charnock, who portrays Marlon Dingle. During the service Dominic Brunt, the show's Paddy Kirk, played a Celtic tune on a mandolin, while the actor's real-life son, 21-year-old Tom, paid an emotional tribute to his dad. "He was my best friend, whom I trusted and respect," he said.

Former co-stars of the actor also attending included I'm A Celebrity's Sheree Murphy, Malandra Burrows and Bad Girls actress Claire King. They joined young cast members Isabel Hodgins, Sammy Winward and Roxanne Pallett.

Fellow famous faces joining Jodie and James – who was happy to lug his bag of clubs aroung the course himself – included radio DJ Johnny Vaughn and Boyzone's Ronan Keating – who had taken time out from his band's UK tour to indulge in one of his favourite pastimes.

When Boyzone were at their peak, the band's managers asked Ronan to keep his enthusiasm for the game under wraps, as it didn't really go with their image. These days he's frequently seen competing at charity tournaments, however. "When I'm not with my family I love to play," says the dad-of-three. "It's a sport I've become very passionate about."

Having already visited her movie star dad Tom Cruise on the set of his WWII epic Valkyrie, Suri Cruise got the chance to seeher mum Katie Holmes in action this week. The two-year-old toddler held on tight to her daddy's hand as the pair accompanied Katie to work on the LA set of her new acting project - American TV series Eli Stone.

With her stylish bob and cherub lips Suri usually looks like a mini Katie. There was a notable difference between the mother and daughter this time, though, as Katie's normally sleek hairstyle had been swapped for a voluminous, Farrah Fawcett-style 'do.

The transformation was for a guest role in the show about a San Francisco lawyer who begins to see visions. It's the first major acting work for the raven-haired actress since she filmed Mad Money last year. '24' could be headed for the big screen reveals series' star Kiefer

There were three new faces joining 24 star Kiefer Sutherland on the promotional trail for the new series of the hit show this week. Fellow Canadian Gil Bellows, Angelina Jolie's Oscar-winning father Jon Voight and British actor Robert Carlyle added their star power to activities surrounding the upcoming pilot of the counter terrorist agency drama. Attending a TV event in Hollywood the foursome thrilled fans by also revealing there are plans for a 24 movie.

"I think we're going to probably do a film when we stop doing the series," revealed Kiefer, who plays counter terrorist agent Jack Bauer in the Africa-set pilot which is heading for US screens this autumn. "I've loved making this show and I've always said the audience ultimately will dictate and tell you when it's time to stop," he adds.

Meanwhile, Full Monty star Robert is remaining tight-lipped about details of the new installment's plot, while explaining his role in the action. "My character's called Carl Benton, who's Jack Bauer's best buddy," he says. "He hasn't seen him for ten years... Jack's on his travels and he comes to see Carl and hang out with him and potentially change his life."

"I can't tell you anymore or Jack Bauer'll come and kill me - and you!" he joked.

Although Robert's new 24 co-star Jon Voight is in town to talk about his role as a baddie in the two-hour special, he also took the opportunity to speak out about his excitement over the birth of the twins his daughter Angelina Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt recently welcomed.

Sir Michael leads stars paying tribute to Heath at 'Dark Knight' premiere

Although it was packed with A-list guests, there was only ever going to be one star at the New York screening of latest Batman flick The Dark Knight - the late Australian star Heath Ledger. Celebs including Sir Michael Caine, Christian Bale and Maggie Gyllenhaal all paid tribute to the actor, saying his memorable performance as evil villain The Joker "steals the movie".

"It's the best performance of a villain I have seen," enthused Michael Caine, who reprises his role as faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth in the latest Batman installment.

Pausing on the carpet - black as a mark of respect for Heath - the veteran gave his opinion on the Academy Award speculation being generated by Heath's haunting performance. "My feeling is that he will get a nomination," he revealed. "I would be very surprised if he didn't get the Oscar. He has my vote anyway."

Hunky Christian, who returns to his role as Bruce Wayne and alter ego Batman, was also full of praise for the young Australian's portrayal of the Joker. "He steals the movie and I'm quite happy to say that," he conceded. "He's a hell of a talent and created a joker that's very iconic and will become a classic portrayal of the ages."

"He was a wonderful character, great company. I expected to be friends with him for many years," he added. "It is tragic he is not here. But I'm here to see his talents and celebrate them, as I hope everybody will."

Justin Timberlake put on the show of his life in LA this week as a celeb-packed audience watched him shimmy his way through several numbers, make countless costume changes, and even dance on a piano at a TV sports awards ceremony.

The Sexyback singer was hosting the event, at which famous faces from the worlds of acting and sport came together to fete athletes and sporting talents in the spotlight during the last 12 months.

Those taking to the stage to present awards included Wimbledon ladies singles champion Venus Williams and LA Galaxy player David Beckham. Host Justin couldn't resist a little playful banter with the British footie ace, who was front row with his wife Victoria Beckham.

"Dude, I got to give you (credit). Single-handedly you made soccer in America this much more popular," joked the singer, holding his thumb and index finger an inch apart. "I call it soccer because in America we already have a game dudes play called football."

Pete Doherty celebrates life of late teenage fan with musical tribute

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty was so moved by the death of a teenage fan he ended up playing at his wake. On Monday the 28-year-old musician took to the stage at a private celebration of the life of 16-year-old Daniel Squires who passed away on July 4, after battling bone cancer.

Pete formed a friendship with the South Tyneside lad after they met backstage at one of the musician's concerts. Upon hearing of the youngster's death, Pete wanted to try and comfort Daniel's friends and family. After the funeral he joined members of Daniel's family and their friends to a local pub, where he accompanied one of Daniel's pals on the guitar in an emotional musicial tribute.

Daniel's father Mark spoke of the rocker's kindness to his son. "He invited Dan to a gig in Bristol and Pete dedicated a song to him," he said. "Pete also gave him his mobile phone number and told Daniel to ring him if he ever needed anything."

Teaming up with British designer Oswald Boateng, Naomi planted a tree in the African republic's capital city of Abuja. The scheme aims to plant a tree for each child born in the area to help turn the city "green" and combat climate change.

"I am very, very happy to be in Nigeria," she said. "Africa is a very rich country … we should show the world Africa is rising in a positive way."

Visitors to London got a glimpse at a slice of British historical ceremony on Wednesday as Queen Elizabeth attended a lavish event at St Paul's Cathedral. The monarch, wearing dramatic royal blue robes and with a tiara adorning her head, was greeted by the capital's Lord Mayor before she ascended the cathedral steps to take part in a service Commemoration and Dedication for the Order of St Michael and St George.

The sixth highest British order of chivalry, The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George dates back to 1818 when it was established by the Prince Regent, later George IV.

Joining the Queen at the ceremony - during which each member of the Order is invited to renew their commitment to faith and service - was the monarch's cousin the Duke of Kent. The Duke was also attired in the elaborate vestments of the Order, which include The Knight and Dame Grand Cross' star, which incorporates the red cross of St George, the Latin motto Auspicium melioris ævi - 'Token of a better age', and a representation of St Michael overcoming Satan.

Members of the Order who have passed away since the last Service were also paid tribute to at the event.

Facelift for Puerto de La Cruz

It has been announced that Puerto de La Cruz, the popular tourist resort in North Tenerife, is to undergo a 12 million Euro facelift.

Three separate plans have been approved focusing on the regeneration of this charming old colonial town.

Tourism is the leading industry in Puerto de la Cruz, which has a tourism history dating back over a hundred years. The cosmopolitan town is very different from the modern 1970’s concrete resorts in the south of the island, which were purpose built to respond to the boom in tourism to Tenerife.

The Puerto de La Cruz regeneration project will bring the historical town up to date with aesthetic and structural improvements, whilst ensuring that its well-known charm and character is not compromised in any way.

The three different plans are:

Plan de Choque (Plan of Impact). This will incorporate 22 specific actions to improve, paint, remodel or restore pavements, streets, squares, facades and buildings, as well as beginning on the construction of a brand new Marina in Puerto de la Cruz. A total of more than €6,380,000 will be spent on this project which will be fully completed by 2009 and will allow visitors to Puerto de la Cruz to fully appreciate the town’s history, charm and beauty.

Plan del Mirador de la Paz (La Paz viewpoint project). From the area of La Paz in Puerto de La Cruz, visitors can enjoy fabulous views over the town and sea beyond from an ideally located viewpoint. With an investment of €500,000, this area will be rebuilt to replace damaged pavements and bring it in line with the style of the historical buildings located in the near vicinity, for example the Hermitage of San Amaro.

Renovación de la Playa Martianez (Renovation of Martianez beach). This project is to focus on the small beach of Playa Martianez. €5 million will be spent on the renovation of the beach, the boulevard and the rebuilding of two bars located on the beach’s edge.

A further project which has been agreed, although details of the specific developments and investment have not yet been disclosed, is the Plan Horizonte 2020 (Horizon plan 2020). This is a general plan for all Spanish tourist destinations, the aim being to focus developments in tourism on raising the competitiveness of resorts, as well as on the environmental, social and economic sustainability. Puerto de la Cruz, as an important and historic tourist destination, has been included in this plan and will receive public financing to improve the town and its facilities.

Turks and Caicos plots green island first

The Turks and Caicos Islands is to give the Caribbean region its first “green island” in the near future as part of the government’s sustainable tourism programme, Premier, Dr. Michael Misick has said.

The 2.5 mile island of Salt Cay, once the centre of the Bermudan salt industry and the mainstay of the Turks and Caicos economy from the late 1600’s until the early 1960’s, has been chosen to be transformed into the “green island,” Premier Misick said at a news conference here.

“Any new development will be consistent with that philosophy (of sustainable development),” the Premier told journalists.

The news conference was being held to launch a public awareness campaign for the 10th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development (STC-10) to be held here from April 28- May 1.

The conference, organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), in collaboration with the Turks and Caicos Islands Tourist Board and the Caribbean Hotel Association, has as its theme, Keeping the Right Balance: Sustaining the Caribbean Coastal Product

"It is hoped that by doing this conference, we are seen as leading the way in sustainable tourism development, but also it would help to educate some of the various people in the tourism industry and the people of the TCI of the need to preserve the environment, the need to have a clean surroundings," Premier Misick said.

The conference, which will be held at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa (by Sandals), a Green Globe Certified hotel, is designed to provide attendees with information on the development and implementation of tourism practices in a responsible manner.

The CTO secretary general, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who also addressed the news conference, said that greater awareness of sustainable tourism among travellers means more people want to go to destinations that practice it.

“This is not only good business sense but it is profitable for the tourism product,” he said.

A number of prominent speakers, among them the noted Canadian naturalist, Dr. David Suzuki, will make presentations at the conference. WTTC backs Caricom decision

The World Travel & Tourism Council has announced its full support of the decision taken by Caricom on 11 March to devote a full day during its regular meeting of Heads of Government in July to focus on Travel & Tourism.

This is the first ever time that tourism has been given such high priority at governmental level in the Caribbean, despite the industry being one of the main contributors to economic wealth.

According to WTTC's latest research, Travel & Tourism contributes 14.8% of total GDP in the Caribbean, 12.9% of total employment, approximately 2 million jobs and 18.2% of export earnings from international visitors and tourism goods.

Overall the TSA results reveal moderate growth for Travel & Tourism Demand in the Caribbean in 2008, growing at a rate of 2.3%. Long-term forecasts point to a stable phase of growth between 2009 and 2018 averaging 3.2% per annum.

However, these forecasts are falling below the 2008 world average of 3.0%, which itself has decreased as a result of the global economic downturn, with a long-term forecasts over the next ten years reflecting an average annual growth rate of 4.4%.

Considering these forecasts, WTTC President Jean-Claude Baumgarten explained, "The Caribbean undoubtedly depends heavily on the Travel & Tourism sector for economic wealth and as a job creator. Globally we are seeing a major slowdown in mature economies, the impact of which is being cushioned by the rapid growth from emerging markets. These new destinations are undertaking massive tourism-related investment programmes and regions such as the Caribbean must focus on its long-term development in order to compete and to fully realise and maintain its full economic potential."

Regionally the Caribbean receives the highest contribution towards Travel & Tourism from government expenditure - 9.2% in 2008, compared to a global average of 3.8%. Expressing his support of Caricom's recent decision to prioritise tourism, Baumgarten urged "Travel & Tourism is vital to the Caribbean and it is crucial that decisions to drive this sector forward come from the highest levels of government. All the while maintaining private sector investment based on sound economic research."

Lufthansa inks Ethiopian codeshare

Lufthansa is further expanding its partnerships with African airlines and from 4th April 2008 passengers can fly with either Ethiopian Airlines or Lufthansa on routes between Frankfurt and the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Customers will then have a choice of seven flights per week on this route. The cooperation agreement was signed by Ato Girma Wake, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, and Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber.

The codeshare flights, which can be booked now, offer customers greater flexibility and a wider choice of connections. A Lufthansa Airbus A300-600 will depart from Frankfurt for Addis Ababa four times weekly, with a stopover in Khartoum. Ethiopian Airlines will operate a thrice-weekly Boeing 767 service on this route.

The codeshare agreement and the cooperation between Lufthansa and Ethiopian Airlines have established the basis for further collaboration. An extension of the codeshare agreement to onward flights from Frankfurt to European and US destinations as well as from Addis Ababa to destinations in Eastern and Central Africa is already under discussion.

“This codesharing agreement will benefit the customers of both airlines. It will boost Lufthansa’s flight offering in Africa and also give passengers from Ethiopia access to our global route network via our Frankfurt hub,” Wolfgang Mayrhuber said.

The frequent flyer programmes of both airlines have been linked since October 2007. Members of the Lufthansa Miles & More programme and Ethiopian Sheba Miles can thus earn and redeem miles on any of the partner airline’s flights.

Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with LSG Sky Chefs, which has assisted in managing and upgrading the airline’s catering division by improving the production standards.

“The codeshare flights between Addis Ababa and Frankfurt mark the beginning of a stronger cooperation to come as both airlines are planning to cover other markets in the future,” noted Ato Girma Wake, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines.

Alitalia deal collapses, new Chairman appointed

Takeover negotiations between Alitalia and Air France-KLM have collapsed and Maurizio Prato has resigned from his position as the company’s Chairman and Director.

Alitalia held an emergency board meeting "in order to take the necessary and opportune resolutions", and today the firm said Aristide Police would take over the Chairman position.

Maurizio Prato had warned the unions involved in the negotiations that the company risked going bankrupt if they did not accept the deal.

The Italian government has been trying for more than a year to sell its 49.9% stake in the Alitalia and says there are no other bidders.

Boeing flies hydrogen fuel cell plane

Boeing has, for the first time in aviation history, flown a manned airplane powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

The recent milestone is the work of an engineering team at Boeing Research & Technology Europe (BR&TE) in Madrid, with assistance from industry partners in Austria, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“Boeing is actively working to develop new technologies for environmentally progressive aerospace products,” said Francisco Escarti, BR&TE’s managing director. “We are proud of our pioneering work during the past five years on the Fuel Cell Demonstrator Airplane project. It is a tangible example of how we are exploring future leaps in environmental performance, as well as a credit to the talents and innovative spirit of our team.”

A two-seat Dimona motor-glider with a 16.3 meter (53.5 foot) wingspan was used as the airframe. Built by Diamond Aircraft Industries of Austria, it was modified by BR&TE to include a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell/lithium-ion battery hybrid system to power an electric motor coupled to a conventional propeller.

Three test flights took place in February and March at the airfield in Ocaña, south of Madrid, operated by the Spanish company SENASA.

During the flights, the pilot of the experimental airplane climbed to an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level using a combination of battery power and power generated by hydrogen fuel cells. Then, after reaching the cruise altitude and disconnecting the batteries, the pilot flew straight and level at a cruising speed of 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) for approximately 20 minutes on power solely generated by the fuel cells.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts hydrogen directly into electricity and heat with none of the products of combustion such as carbon dioxide. Other than heat, water is its only exhaust.

According to Boeing researchers, PEM fuel cell technology potentially could power small manned and unmanned air vehicles. Over the longer term, solid oxide fuel cells could be applied to secondary power-generating systems, such as auxiliary power units for large commercial airplanes. Boeing does not envision that fuel cells will ever provide primary power for large passenger airplanes, but the company will continue to investigate their potential, as well as other sustainable alternative fuel and energy sources that improve environmental performance.

BR&TE, part of the Boeing Phantom Works advanced R&D unit, has worked closely with Boeing Commercial Airplanes and a network of partners since 2003 to design, assemble and fly the experimental craft.

FRA train accident investigation reports go online

To increase public awareness about the causes of specific train accidents and to reduce the need for individuals to submit Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is for the first time making its investigation reports of major train accidents and other incidents available online, FRA Administrator Joseph H. Boardman stated.

“There’s no reason that anyone who’s interested shouldn’t be able to find out the probable cause of a train accident,” said Boardman, explaining that formal FRA accident investigation reports generally focus on high-consequence train-to-train collisions, derailments, certain highway-rail grade crossing collisions, and all railroad employee fatalities.

Boardman said that the Factual Investigation Reports now posted on the FRA web site contain detailed narratives describing the circumstances of the accident or incident and provide an analysis of the facts and FRA’s conclusion as to why the event occurred. Making this information more accessible will benefit railroads, railroad employees, state and local officials, communities, shippers, insurers and others directly or indirectly impacted by these events, he added.

FRA accident investigation reports for all of 2005 and 2006 and the first quarter of 2007 are online now. The reports for the remainder of 2007 will be posted in the coming months, and those for 2008 as well as all future reports will be made available online as they are completed and finalized, Boardman said. A major train accident or incident investigation typically takes six to nine months to complete, and no portions of reports are made public until an investigation is finalized. An up-to-date listing of all active, open and ongoing investigations will also be posted online.

EC authorises Slovakia to grant fiscal aid to railway and inland waterways transport

The European Commission has decided not to raise any objections to the excise duty reductions and exemptions introduced by Slovakia for the benefit of railway and inland waterways transport. These measures are aimed at reducing external costs in the transport sector.

Since 1st May 2004 Slovakia applies excise duty exemption with respect to fuel used in inland navigation and excise duty reduction with respect to fuel used in railway transportation. The measures are in line with the provisions of the Energy taxation directive. The period covered by the State aid scheme is 10 years.

As railway and inland waterway transport do not allow for direct door-to-door delivery, they are exposed to a number of additional expenses, among which transhipment costs play the main role. At the same time, rail and inland waterway transport have much lower external costs in terms of accident, climate change and air pollution and their use is therefore beneficial for the society. Both transport modes also have considerable spare capacity and can therefore play a role in diverting traffic away from the congested parts of the road networks.

It is appropriate to bring down the cost of use of combined transport operations in order to put cleaner transport modes on equal footing with the road transport said EC. The Slovak Republic opted for excise duty exemptions and reductions to reduce the difference in costs faced by different transport modes.

These fiscal measures applicable to inland navigation and railway transportation are compatible with the European State aid rules[1].

ATA Airlines discontinues all operations

After filing for Chapter 11 on April 2, 2008 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis, IN, ATA Airlines has discontinued all operations and cancelled all current and future flights. "Following the loss of a key contract for our military charter business, it became impossible for ATA to continue operations. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to provide our customers or others with advance notice," said the company in its statement.

"We apologize for the disruption caused by the sudden shutdown of ATA and regret the impact on passengers, employees, suppliers, and other parties. Negotiations between Alitalia and Air France-KLM stopped

The negotiations between Alitalia, Air France-KLM, labour unions and professional associations were stopped as Alitalia announced. The deadline for reaching the effectiveness conditions set out in the agreement signed with Air France-KLM on 15 March 2008 was ended on 2 April and therefore, expired.

Maurizio Prato has resigned from his position as the Company’s Chairman and Director. The Board of Directors met yesterday (3 April) in order to take the necessary and opportune resolutions.

Air France-KLM accepts that there is no longer any basis for further negotiations

"When it submitted its final offer on 14 March this year, Air France-KLM indicated that the offer was contingent on prior agreement with the trade unions representative of the majority of the various categories of Alitalia employees (ground staff, flight crews); this agreement concerned the implementation of the Alitalia restructuring plan and its related severance measures," said the Groups in its statement.

"Air France-KLM know from experience that in the airline industry no restructuring plan has ever succeeded if it was not first agreed by employees. Consequently, Air France-KLM has always considered that the Alitalia industrial plan would have no chance of success unless it had the backing of the trade unions representing Alitalia's workforce.

After several lengthy negotiation sessions, the trade unions formulated a new proposal corresponding to a totally different framework to the one in which Air France-KLM had restricted itself since Autumn 2007.

In formal terms, Air France-KLM was thus regretfully forced to accept that there was no longer any basis for further negotiations. This is because Air France-KLM has no mandate from its Board of Directors to follow up this new proposal. As regards content, the new proposal, which would involve retaining a number of activities generating large scale-losses within the Alitalia group, seems incompatible with the target of a rapid return to profit."

Chairman Spinetta said: "I regretfully acknowledge the breakdown in negotiations, which is none of our doing. This is a project I have profoundly believed in and continue to do so, because it would have ensured Alitalia a rapid return to profitable growth”.

Antigua unveils music festival plans

Oman Air gives mobiles green light

Oman Air has joined a growing number of Middle East airlines planning to offer OnAir's inflight passenger communications services, which includes mobile phone and BlackBerry usage, as well as Internet access.

From 2009, Oman Air passengers will be able to use their mobile phones and BlackBerry-type devices to send and receive text messages, emails including attachments, and to make and receive mobile phone calls during flights.

They will also be able to use laptops and the seat-back inflight entertainment screen to access the Internet and use webmail and instant messaging. The OnAir service is based on Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband.

OnAir's service will be fitted on the seven new Airbus A330 aircraft to be delivered to Oman Air in 2009. The aircraft will fly on long-haul routes from Oman to both Asia and Europe.

Ziad Karim Al Haremi, Chief Executive Officer of Oman Air, said, "Oman Air has consistently contributed to the technological advance of commercial aviation. Spirit starts flights to Panama City

Fort Lauderdale’s hometown of low cost carrier Spirit Airlines begins three weekly non-stop flights to Panama City, Panama tomorrow, with increased frequency to daily service starting May 1, 2008.

In addition to this new non-stop service, Spirit also offers connecting service to Panama from its domestic network.

The new route will be operated by Spirit’s Airbus fleet, the youngest in the Americas.

Panama City is one of many new routes that are part of Spirit’s aggressive 2008 expansion plan. Already the largest carrier at Fort Lauderdale, Spirit is well on its way to increasing its South Florida operations by 40 percent this year.

In addition to Panama City, Spirit has also announced that it will begin new and/or expanded service to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico; San Antonio and Boston, among other destinations to be announced over the coming weeks.

“Our passengers have spoken and we’re giving them what they want – more ultra low fares to even more destinations throughout the U.S., Latin America and Caribbean,” said Barry Biffle, Spirit’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

Derailed train suspends DLR

Docklands Light Railway (DLR) services have been suspended because of a derailed train near Deptford Bridge station.

There are no trains running between Lewisham and Cutty Sark after a train hit an object at 6.15am today (April 4).

Transport for London has not said what the object was but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Staff made sure everyone got off the train safely and no-one was injured.

Talks to avoid Tube strike

Talks are to take place with London Underground workers over the next few days in a bid to avert a three-day strike that could see travel chaos.

Tube workers last week voted in favour of a three-day strike in protest at safety on the Underground.

The walk-out is scheduled to start from 6.30pm on Sunday, April 6 to 6.30pm on Wednesday, April 9.

The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union and Transport Salaried Staffs Association claim standards will be compromised if plans go ahead to close 40 ticket offices and cut opening hours.

Transport for London (TfL) insist the measures do not relate to safety and dismissed the need for industrial action.

Howard Collins, TfL's deputy chief operating officer, said: "All of the issues raised by the RMT are already being addressed through the normal negotiating process. Significant progress has already been made and most of the issues have been agreed."

Cyprus’ New Crossing Meets Trouble

(AP) NICOSIA, Cyprus - Greek and Turkish Cypriot authorities reopened the divided capital’s Ledra Street on Thursday, but were forced to close it for nearly two hours following a dispute over how to police the street, long considered a symbol of the island’s partitioning.

The opening of the street, located in a central Nicosia shopping district, was meant to serve as a catalyst for peace negotiations between Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

But the festive atmosphere quickly soured after the crossing was temporarily closed.

Stefanos Stefanou, a spokesman for the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government, said Turkish Cypriot police illegally patrolled part of the street by entering the U.N.-controlled buffer zone.

"We have been very clear that violations cannot be tolerated," Stefanou told The Associated Press.

The closure ended after scores of protesters gathered on both sides, chanting "Cyprus belongs to its people," and U.N. officials mediated between rival police forces.

"After consultations with the U.N., we have been given assurances that this will not happen again," said Kypros Michailidis, Nicosia’s Greek Cypriot police chief.

There was no immediate comment from Turkish Cypriot officials.

The brief closure contrasted with the opening ceremony earlier Thursday, when officials from both sides of the divide cut the ribbons of colored helium balloons to mark the occasion. Crews had swept away debris, repaved the street, installed lighting and reinforced abandoned buildings along the 230-foot stretch of Ledra Street that runs through a U.N. controlled buffer zone.

"We managed to turn the world’s attention on us today, and hours later we’ve managed to mess things up," said protester Valentina Sofocleous, who headed a citizens’ campaign to reopen Ledra Street.

"This is absurd, but we believe it’s a problem that will be overcome and that Greek and Turkish Cypriots will live together."

The street in the center of Nicosia’s medieval quarter was split in 1964 during an outbreak of communal fighting when British peacekeepers laid barbed wire between the street’s Greek and Turkish Cypriot sectors.

Ten years later, the entire island was divided after Turkey’s army invaded after a failed coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece.

Turkish Cypriots relaxed boundary restrictions in 2003, and since then five other crossings have opened. But ID cards or passports are still needed to move between the two sides.

Hopes of reaching a settlement in Cyprus were given a boost earlier this year with the election of Christofias, who replaced a hard-liner and pledged to restart talks with Talat. The two agreed to open Ledra Street during their first meeting last month.

Both men have also agreed to end a four-year stalemate in peace talks and are preparing for full-fledged negotiations.

Christofias said the next step was to agree on pulling back soldiers manning guard posts on either side of the buffer zone inside the capital’s center that is ringed by 16th Century Venetian walls.

He also said he would try to open another crossing point near Limnitis in the island’s remote northwest.

Some officials had warned against being overly optimistic during the opening ceremony.

"The road has opened, but the bullet-pocked buildings remind us that there is still a long way to go," Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou said during the initial celebrations.

"Time will tell whether this road will become the avenue for reunification."

Carnival Corporation has announced a voluntary refund of the company’s fuel supplement for applicable U.S. bookings that were made prior to November 7, 2007, under an agreement with the Florida Attorney General’s Office.

The fuel supplement, announced November 7, 2007, was applied to all U.S. bookings for voyages departing on or after February 1, 2008, regardless of when the booking was made, for cruises on the Carnival Corporation & plc brands Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and The Yachts of Seabourn. However, this effective date allowed guests already booked at the time of the announcement the opportunity to cancel and receive a full refund.

The company will now refund the fuel supplement for those guests who were already booked at the time the supplement was announced. Refunds for affected guests will be implemented based on cruise departure date according to the following schedule:

For cruises departing on or prior to April 4, 2008, guests will receive a refund in the same form they used to purchase their cruise.
For cruises departing from April 5, 2008 through June 23, 2008, guests will receive an on-board credit.
For cruises departing on or after June 24, 2008, guests’ bookings will be adjusted to remove the supplement.

The fuel supplement remains in effect for all bookings made on or after November 7, 2007. The $5 per person per day fuel supplement applies only to the first and second guests in a stateroom and will not exceed $70 per person per voyage. Also, at the time the fuel supplement was announced, travel agents whose clients had existing reservations were offered $10 per booking in administrative compensation for notifying those clients of the supplement. Those travel agents will still receive the $10 per booking.

This announcement will have no impact on the company’s previously reported 2008 first quarter financial results or its March 20, 2008, guidance for the second quarter and full year 2008 since the company did not recognize fuel supplement revenues associated with bookings made prior to November 7, 2007, while the Florida Attorney General’s Office was conducting its review the company stated.

Fairmont announces key appointments overseas

In response to recent development activity and the addition of several new international destinations, Fairmont announced several key appointments. Taking on new roles within the company are Steven Jones, vice president, design & construction, Middle East & Africa, Paul Nelson, regional director, brand marketing, Europe, Africa & Middle East, and Trudy Moreno, director, sales & marketing, Fairmont Beijing.

With several development projects underway in the Middle East and Africa, Jones will be responsible for upholding Fairmont’s design and construction standards, as well as overseeing major capital investment projects within the region. Working alongside various internal functional groups, Jones will also oversee the day to day activity of all design and construction initiatives in the region, ensuring all are on budget, competitive, and executed in a timely fashion. Jones most recently held the position of vice president, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Middle East & Africa and brings over 16 years of design experience to his new role.

Nelson’s recent appointment will see him responsible for the development of Fairmont’s marketing communication plans in Europe, Africa & Middle East. As part of this newly minted role, Nelson will also be responsible for brand management and leveraging the Fairmont brand in all elements and aspects of the company’s operations overseas. Most recently, Nelson held the position of global marketing manager, Europe, Africa & Middle East at American Express.

Another new addition to Fairmont is Moreno, who brings over 24 years of experience to the Fairmont Beijing. In her new role, Moreno will be responsible for implementing an aggressive marketing plan at Fairmont’s flagship hotel in China, the Fairmont Beijing, which is expected to open later this year. She will also guide the media planning and spending for the hotel, while also overseeing the management of property specific marketing collateral. Moreno joins Fairmont from the Intercontinental, Doha Qatar where she served as director of marketing and sales.

The 18-story, 401-room downtown convention center hotel has retained the Marriott flag and will be managed by White Lodging following the sale.

“As Richmond’s full-service hotel market leader, this asset attracted tremendous investor interest,” commented David Altobello, Vice President of MK, who marketed the asset and structured the transaction.

Mr. Knight has formed several similar real estate investment trusts throughout his career. The acquisition adds the Richmond Marriott Hotel to its growing portfolio of Marriott and Hilton properties. Although Apple REIT Seven invests in hotels throughout the Eastern seaboard, they now own the major full-service asset in their home market.

During the last 18 months MK has structured more than $5 billion in hotel real estate transactions worldwide.

Gate Gourmet has chosen Inflight Service Europe AB (IFS) as its partner for all duty free-related sales aboard Norwegian Air Shuttle, which recently renewed and expanded its contract with Gate Gourmet to provide systemwide onboard catering and provisioning.

Emirates touches down to the beat of African drums

Emirates achieved a new milestone as it touched down to the vibrant beats of the African drums at Cape Town – its 100th global destination, and second gateway in South Africa. Signalling the start of daily, non-stop flights between Dubai, the nerve centre of the Middle East, and Cape Town, the inaugural flight EK 770 piloted by South African native, Captain Chris Rademan received a traditional water canon salute while onboard passengers were greeted by a pulsating performance by members of the Marimba band.

A high-level Emirates delegation comprising Nabil Sultan, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations, Gulf, Middle East and Iran, and Adnan Kazim, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations, Africa flew on the first flight accompanied by some 250 passengers hailing from 18 different countries, some coming from as far as the United States, France, Germany, Poland, Kuwait, Bahrain, India and Pakistan, in addition to Emirates' home base, the United Arab Emirates.

The arriving Emirates delegation and passengers were welcomed by Lynne Brown, Member of the Executive Council, Western Cape Province; Calvyn Gilfellan, Chief Executive Officer, Cape Town Routes Unlimited, the official tourism destination marketing organisation for Cape Town and the Western Cape; and over 50 representatives from Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and Emirates South Africa.

As a result of South Africa’s growing economy and the escalating demand for air travel, the Dubai-based airline has steadily built up its presence in the country. Last year, Emirates strengthened its 14-flights-per-week Johannesburg service with an additional frequency, taking the weekly total to 21 flights.

Adnan noted: “Emirates is grateful to the South African government and airport officials for assisting us in the successful start of our daily operations to Cape Town. The new service will provide its customers in Europe, Middle East, the Indian-sub continent and Asia-Pacific with direct access to Cape Town, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Cape Town represents the first new gateway to be launched by Emirates in 2008. The airline has already announced its plans to start services to Calicut, India and Guangzhou, China, both on 1st July followed by Los Angeles on 1st September.

To Cape Town, Emirates will introduce approximately 2000 seats and over 100 tonnes of cargo capacity per week - a development that will surely be welcomed by business and leisure travellers on either sides of the equator.

The day's events were concluded with the ceremonial cutting of a cake, and an exchange of gifts between the Emirates and South African delegations. Later that evening Emirates’ return flight bound for Dubai welcomed its first Cape Town passengers.

Air France and Delta launch three trans-atlantic routes from Heathrow

Air France and Delta Air Lines officially kicked off their joint venture agreement with a joint press conference during which Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Air France-KLM, and Richard Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Air Lines, announced the launch of three trans-Atlantic routes that take full advantage of the E.U.-U.S. Open Skies Agreement.

The joint venture partners will operate daily nonstop flights between London-Heathrow and Los Angeles-LAX, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and twice-daily flights to New York-JFK. Air France will operate the LAX flight while Delta will operate the JFK and Atlanta flights.

According to the terms of their expanded joint venture agreement, signed October 17, 2007, the two airlines will share revenues and costs on flights operated by both carriers between London-Heathrow and the US, as well as on flights between Air France’s Paris-CDG and Lyon hubs, and Delta’s Atlanta, New York – JFK, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City hubs.

By 2010, the agreement will be extended to all trans-Atlantic flights operated by Air France and Delta between Europe and the Mediterranean on one side and North America on the other side, as well as all flights between Los Angeles and Tahiti.

The launch of the new Heathrow-Los Angeles route makes Air France the first European carrier to offer its long-haul customers the benefits of Open Skies.

“Air France’s decision to launch a new transatlantic route to and from the UK marks a totally new phase in the developing world air transport sector,” said Gourgeon. “Thanks to the new open skies agreement, our ambition in the years to come is to rank among the leading world players on this market. Along with KLM, Delta and our other SkyTeam partners, we are determined to offer passengers the greatest choice of routes and schedules between Europe and the rest of the world. The ability to offer passengers access to an enlarged network out of London, the leading European market, is a key phase in this strategy.”

With new flights between Heathrow and Atlanta as well as Heathrow and New York-JFK, Delta is strengthening its position across the Atlantic.

“We are very pleased to be able to serve London’s Heathrow Airport in addition to Gatwick,” said Anderson. “This is the world’s top business destination and, as a global player, Delta will now be able to offer two options for travelers into this city. We are excited not only by the opportunity to serve this destination but also for the increased cooperation between Delta and Air France, which is being demonstrated today. Our cooperation is yielding tangible and positive benefits for our airlines, our passengers and our employees.”

Within the framework of the Open Skies agreement, and in addition to the three new long-haul services to and from Heathrow, Delta will operate seven services out of Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh to U.S. gateways on a codeshare basis with Air France.

The market between the UK and Ireland and North America offers some of the highest growth potential. In terms of size, this market accounts for nearly half of all transatlantic traffic in Europe, with 8 out of the 12 busiest routes between Europe and the US serving London including the Los Angeles-London and Heathrow-JFK service. The London-Los Angeles route is similar in market size to the Paris-New York route.

Delta flights operate from Terminal 4 at Heathrow. The New York-JFK and the Atlanta flights are operated by a Delta with Air France codeshare using a Boeing 767-300ER, with up to 216 seat capacity. The new routes will not increase the total number of frequencies at Heathrow as Delta will be using some of Air France’s slots at London Heathrow.

More than ninety long-haul connections a week for Dusseldorf Airport summer schedule

Beijing, Shanghai and Toronto: Dusseldorf International’s new summer flight schedule offers these and other new highlights. In particular for the long-haul sector, Germany’s third largest airport has attractive new routes that complement its proven network of European traffic. Beginning in May, Air Berlin will connect Dusseldorf with the two most important cities in China. Lufthansa will also be taking off in long-haul aircrafts for intercontinental destinations, most recently for example to Toronto, the Canadian metropolis. And Lufthansa will also use these wide-body jets to New York and Chicago in the new flight schedule. This summer, some 70 airlines – from classical mainstream to low-cost airlines – will connect Dusseldorf with over 180 desti-nations worldwide.

“In cooperation with the airlines, we have enhanced our route profile for the new schedule,” says Christoph Blume, spokesperson for airport management. “Dusseldorf is the most important airport in Germany’s largest commercial region. We view expansion of intercontinental air traffic as one of our essential tasks to provide the economy with the required mobility,” Blume emphasizes. This summer, passengers can choose from 92 long-haul flights a week, among them 56 flights a week to North America. Both Lufthansa and the Air Berlin Group use the largest airport in Nordrhein-Westfalen as a hub in their network. Blume, “The airlines see their future in Dusseldorf and are doing an impressive job of building up their presence here. This is a clear confirmation of the airport and the strength of the location.”

New this summer

Beginning May 1, Air Berlin will fly five times a week to Beijing and Shanghai – two new destinations from Dusseldorf. The flights to Beijing will depart Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7:45 pm. Air Berlin’s red-and-white jets will leave for Shanghai on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 5:20 pm. In addition, the airline will continue offering many flights added to the winter flight schedule, for example to Hamburg, Stuttgart, Zurich and Vienna. This will thus optimize the hub function for the airline’s long-haul flights. In addition, the connections to Los Angeles that were cut for the winter season will begin again. The airline will fly to the largest city in California up to five times a week.

Lufthansa is continuing its expansion and increasing its flights from Dusseldorf and will station three additional long-haul Airbus 340-300 aircraft at Nordrhein-Westfalen’s largest airport beginning May 1. Toronto, the Canadian hub, will be added to the flight schedule with six connections a week. Lufthansa will also be using these large-body jets on its successfully established routes with daily flights to New York and six flights a week to Chicago.

Another new destination on the Dusseldorf flight schedule is Wroclaw, which Lufthansa will be flying to daily beginning March 30. Wroclaw on the Oder is the fourth largest city in Poland and the economic, scientific and cultural center of the Lower Silesia region. Lufthansa is also adding the holiday destinations Usedom, Ibiza, Corsica, Sardinia, Newquay and Jersey. Flights to the Corsican airport Bastia, an entirely new destination from Dusseldorf, and to Olbia airport on Sardinia will also be added on Saturday starting in April. Additionally, Lufthansa will fly to Ibiza every Saturday beginning in April. Flights to Heringsdorf on Usedom, another new destination from Dusseldorf, will be offered twice weekly beginning the end of April. The British destinations – the Channel Island of Jersey and Newquay on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall – are new destinations as well and beginning with the summer vacation in Nordrhein-Westfalen in June, there will be Saturday flights there too.

The Fly Nordic airline is new to Dusseldorf and will offer six connections to the Swedish capital Stockholm beginning in June.

A new airline and a new destination: The Armenian airline Armavia will connect Dusseldorf Mondays and Thursdays with Yerevan, capital of Armenia and cultural and commercial center of the country in the Caucasus.

Blue Wings Airlines is planning to continue its scheduled flights begun in the winter flight schedule during the summer. The airline flies to Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport nine times a week and to St. Petersburg five times a week.

Croatia Airlines is also adding a new destination to Dusseldorf’s flight schedule. Starting May 19, the airline will fly to the Croatian capital Zagreb three times a week.

Turkish Airlines joins Star Alliance

At a ceremony held in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines was welcomed as the 20th Star Alliance member airline. The new member will offer the alliance with an additional 31 destinations - mainly in Turkey, Central Asia and the Middle East. Overall, the aviation alliance now offers 18,000 daily flights serving 965 airports in 162 countries.

"With Turkish Airlines we have gained a new member carrier with a strong home market which is also one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Moreover, we can now offer the Star Alliance benefits to a large number of new travellers, while at the same time simplifying travel for our existing customers to many of the new emerging markets in Central Asia and the Middle East," said Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance CEO.

Turkish Airlines is already one of the fastest growing airlines in Europe (passenger traffic growth of 23.5% according to the Association of European Airlines (AEA) and holds a strategic position between Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The MedCruise member cruise port of Valletta has bagged two awards by Dream World Cruising, an influential cruise industry publication, earlier this month at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention held in Miami.

VISET Malta plc received the awards for ‘Most Improved Port Facilities’ and ‘Most Improved Destination’ for the year 2007. ‘Most Improved Port Facilities’ award acknowledged the improvement seen in the cruise product, such as berthing facilities and infrastructure as well as parking and related services, whilst ‘Most Improved Destination’ awards improved landscaping, transport facilities as well as new attractions and experiences.

DLF-Hilton launches new hotel developments in India

DLF and Hilton Hotels Corporation in India announced that they have signed management agreements involving seven new hotel developments in the pipeline. This marks the second stage in the DLF-Hilton Joint Venture Company’s overall strategic development plans to build and develop 75 hotels in India in the next five to seven years. The new projects named today will bring the total number of new hotels under this DLF – Hilton alliance to 16, comprising 3500 rooms. All these 16 projects are in various stages of development and construction.

Three Hotels in Dwarka

The Hilton Dwarka, Hilton Garden Inn Dwarka and Homewood Suites by Hilton Dwarka are planned to provide 800 hotel rooms located at International Convention Centre complex in Dwarka (New Delhi), which will comprise nearly 2 million sq. ft. of development, including international convention and exhibition centre facilities, and premium commercial facilities.

Hilton Residences Kolkata

The 100-room Hilton Residences Kolkata is planned to be located in the Central Business District in Kolkata and is intended to complement the Hilton Kolkata (a project that was announced in May 2007) by offering long-stay residents a full service Hilton experience in an apartment setting.

Hilton Garden Inn Chennai / OMR; Homewood Suites by Hilton Chennai / OMR. The 250-room Hilton Garden Inn Chennai / OMR and 100-room Homewood Suites by Hilton Chennai / OMR are planned to be located along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (“OMR”), often known as “India’s IT Highway”, abundant with InformationTechnology parks. The Hilton Garden Inn Chennai / OMR will aim to offer quality business focused accommodations to frequent business travelers to the area, while the Homewood Suites hotel is planned to offer an extended-stay option which includes home-like amenities such as fully-furnished kitchens, a relaxation/living space, and separate bedroom.

Hilton Garden Inn Trivandrum

The Hilton Garden Inn Trivandrum is planned to be located less than five kilometres from Trivandrum’s Technopark. When completed this focused service hotel will be eight kilometers from the existing airport and accessible from three main road routes connecting guests to the north, west and east of the city.

Aloha Airlines shuts down passenger operations

Aloha Airlines shut down its inter-island and transpacific passenger flight operations. Aloha's last day of operations was yesterday Monday, March 31, 2008. Yesterday, Aloha operated its schedule with the exception of flights from Hawaii to the West Coast and flights from Orange County to Reno and Sacramento, and Oakland to Las Vegas. Code-share partner United Airlines and other airlines were prepared to assist and accommodate Aloha's passengers who have been inconvenienced.

The shutdown of Aloha's passenger operations will affect about 1,900 employees. Aloha also announced that its air cargo and aviation services units will continue to operate as usual while the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeks bids from potential buyers. On March 27, 2008, Saltchuk Resources, Inc., announced its intention to buy Aloha's air cargo business.

"This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii," said David A. Banmiller, Aloha's president and chief executive officer. "Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger business. We had no choice but to take this action.

"We deeply regret the impact this will have on our dedicated employees who have made Aloha one of the best operating airlines in the country. Aloha Airlines was founded in 1946 to give Hawaii's people a choice in inter-island air transportation.

Unfortunately, unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travelers in the true spirit of Aloha. We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal business partners who have supported this company for many, many years."

Increasing number of UAE travellers opt for Luton

An unexpected result of Silverjet’s popular new route from Dubai to London has been the increased interest in boutique airports such as London’s Luton airport, where the all-business class carrier’s exclusive private terminal is based.

The convenience of flying into London Luton has been dramatically highlighted by the recent troubles at Heathrow Airport, which has faced major flight and baggage delays including a reported 208 flights cancelled and 15,000 bags lost in the first three days of operation of its new T5 terminal.

Now more than ever, the desire to travel hassle-free and avoid the stress of traditional ‘hub’ airports such as Heathrow has driven UAE travellers to look for a way to avoid crowded, super-sized terminals.

Aegean Airlines to launch service from London to Athens

Aegean Airlines will commence a twice daily non-stop service from London Stansted Airport to Athens from 15 May 2008. The Athens to Stansted route will be serviced by the brand new Airbus A321 which is configured with 195 seats in two classes and will offer a state of the art in-flight entertainment system.

Cruise travellers are most interested in Eastern Mediterranean destinations

Because of the increased interest in European cruising, Cruise Critic, the online resource for consumer-oriented cruise reviews and news, conducted a survey about cruising in Europe. More than 1,400 travellers from around the world completed the survey. Forty-two percent of survey respondents are planning to take a European cruise within the next three years.

“According to our survey, Europe is a draw because cruisers can experience a variety of different cultures and attractions in one trip,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief, Cruise Critic.

Europe = Variety

Nearly one third of survey respondents indicated that what they find most appealing about a European cruise is the opportunity to experience a variety of different cultures and attractions. Another 27 percent said it is the opportunity to visit many different European cities/locations during one holiday.

Mediterranean Tops Cruise Itineraries

The Mediterranean is the top choice for cruise itineraries in Europe, with 32 percent of the respondents choosing the Eastern Mediterranean (Athens, Istanbul, Greek Islands) and 20 percent opting for the Western Mediterranean (Rome, Naples, Barcelona) as the European cruise holiday itinerary that interests them most.

When it comes to the ports travellers are most interested in visiting, the Greek Islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Ios) were the favourite for 25 percent of respondents. Moving into northern waters, St. Petersburg, Russia is second with nine percent.

Rome (15 percent) and Venice (13 percent) are the most popular destinations for travellers that want to add an on-land vacation to their cruise trips.

Big Ship Style

When it comes to style of cruise holiday in Europe just over half (51 percent) of the respondents said their preference was for a big ship with lots of activities and entertainment. The next most appealing European cruise experience is on a small ship/yacht (31 percent) followed by a river cruise (19 percent.)

Cost Concerns

The main deterrent to taking a cruise in Europe is cost, with the high exchange rate especially worrying American travellers (33 percent), as is the cost of the airfare (14 percent.)

Sailing Saves

The most common cost-cutting tip given by cruisers is to either book early or last-minute. Other popular suggestions include booking your own air and transfer arrangements, staying in a cheaper category of cabin, using a travel agent or cruise broker, and researching online.

When asked how to save money during a cruise holiday, the most frequent recommendations concern shore excursions, drinks and gambling. The top tip is to arrange your own excursions and not take those organized by the ship. Suggestions for avoiding the bar bill blues (alcohol and sodas) include smuggling a private supply on board, checking the bar tab daily, ordering the drink-of-the-day or purchasing an all-inclusive package. The recommendation for gambling is – “don’t.”
